The cheapest way from Bangkok to Angkor Wat

Step by Step - The cheapest way to go from Bangkok to Angkor Wat or Siem Reap

Some people would argue that walking, biking or hitching is the cheapest way. And they might be right. But this is not for everyone so let me show you  the easy way. And I challenge you on the first leg of this trip. How about you get from Bangkok to the border of Cambodia for less than 2 US $? Only hitching would be cheaper but since you have to wait for a lift in the heat of Thailand you will probably drink for more than 2 US$. And the wear and tear to your shoes or bike would be more than 2 US$ as well. After you cleared the border it is another 9 US$ to get to Siem Reap – the gateway to Angkor Wat.

So lets break it down in small pieces.

Train Bangkok - Siem Reap

From Bangkok to the Cambodian border by train…

From Bangkok, it is about 265 km to the border in Poipet. The train goes all the way from Bangkok to Ban Klong Luk which is only 200 meters from the Cambodian border. It is a 3rd class train only but the Thai 3rd class trains are quite nice. There are vendors walking the train that sell food and drinks and it is quite clean. You can open the windows and enjoy the breeze while your eyes travel to the countryside.

The train also stops at Phaya Thai Station next to the Phaya Thai BTS Skytrain station. And Makkasan Station which is not the same as the Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station!! Bus Asoke Station is close to Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station and Phetchaburi MRT Station. Boarding at these stations can be more convenient if you’re staying in northern Bangkok.

Crossing the Border to Cambodia

You can stay one night at the Thai side of the border or cross the border and stay one night on the Cambodian side.  Or you continue the trip on the same day.

After you are done with the paperwork at the Poipet border post walk to the big roundabout. You will see an official free transit bus to the Poipet Tourist Passenger International Terminal about 10 minutes down the road. From here all the shared taxis and buses leave for Siem Reap  (and Battambang or Phnom Penh).  The shuttle bus (and the man with the official badge who guides you to it) is legitimate. Beware of touts along the way and read up on all the border scams to be prepared. This is the worst border crossing I ever saw – talking about scams here only!

Take a Bus to Siem Reap

I would take a bus but you could try to hitch from here. Usually, cars in Cambodia are full of people but you could get lucky with a truck. You could try for a while and if you have no luck you could take a bus.

The 150 km (94 miles) from Poipet to Siem Reap should take about 2½ hours by shared taxi or 3 hours with a  bus.  Prices are posted at the ticket counter at the Poipet Tourist Passenger International Terminal.  A shared taxi costs about 12 US$ per seat.  A bus will cost you about 9 US$, a minivan about 10 US$.

If you left Bangkok with the morning train at 05:55, you should reach Siem Reap around 15:00.  If you left Bangkok at 13:05, you should reach Siem Reap around 22:00. Keep in mind that low season or high season makes a difference at the border. Some people are lucky and make it in 20 minutes or less. And some take hours. This will affect your time – and Monsoon rain or a clear sunny day will make a difference for the bus as well!

From Bangkok to Angkor Wat by Bus

From Bangkok to Siem Reap

From Bangkok to Siem Reap by Bus

Most people that go to Angkor Wat think that the bus stop is also at the temples. Not to mention the hotels and guesthouses. But the gateway to Angkor Wat is actually Siem Reap. Angkor Archaeological Park where the temples are is about 5 kilometers outside of town. If you want to travel from  Bangkok to Siem Reap with a bus you have s few options.

Our Recommendation:

If you ask me I would take Giant Ibis Transportation (I explain everything at this link) to go from Bangkok to Cambodia. If you want to go from Bangkok to Siem Reap you have two options: 07.45 from Giant Ibis Bangkok – รถโดยสารไจแอนท์ไอบิสในกรุงเทพฯ 229 Phra Sumen Rd, Khwaeng Talat Yot, Khet Phra Nakhon, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10200, Thailand (super close to Khao San Road!) The bus stops downtown Siem Reap at the Giant Ibis Bus terminal just north of the Sokha Angkor Resort, directly behind the Angkor National Museum.
The other option would be the 08.45 from the 12Go Makkasan Station – แอร์พอร์ตเรลลิงค์มักกะสัน. The station is right at the Airport Rail Link. This comes in handy if you stay somewhere with access to the MRT system. You can take a train to Phetchaburi Station. You could even catch a Klong Boat to Asok Pier. You find the booking site here: Bangkok to Siem Reap

From Khao San Road:

Khao San Travel Mart (51 Trokrongmai, Chaofah RD., Pranakorn, Bangkok 10200) at 08:00, 09:00 and 01:00. The trip should take about 8 hours with border crossing. Usually, they pick you up at the Mc Donalds close to the police station at Khao San Road. But check your ticket before you miss the bus since this can change any time. You can book your ticket here: Khao San Travel Mart

From Morchit Bus Station to Siem Reap

Morchit Bus Station is also called Mo Chit or Chatuchak Terminal

Transport Co LA is a Thai government-operated company and has one bus from Morchit to Siem Reap  at 09:00. The trip takes about 9 hours. Some days there is another one at 07:30 which usually is a bit faster.

Keep in Mind

You will cross an international border! You need a valid visa to do so. If you do not have a visa you can get a Visa on Arrival the border. It should cost you US$30 and they only accept clean dollar bills. If you want to pay in Thai Bath be prepared to pay more. Bring two passport pictures as well. Since May 2019 they usually scan your passport picture but if the machine is broken you better be prepared. Your passport needs at last one empty page for the sticker and some space for two stamps. Sometimes there is a mysterious separate 100 baht fee on top of the US$30 fee for the stamps. If the line is not too long you can insist to get your visa without tea money.

The bus company might arrange a special VIP service for another 5US$ to speed things up. Usually, you can do everything on your own save this money.

Most companies change the bus at the border but will bring your bags to the other side. Sometimes you have to bring them yourself

The best Bus Operator in Cambodia

Bus Phnom Penh to Siam Reap

Giant Ibis - The Ruler of the Cambodian Bus Market

Giant Ibis is quite new on the market since it only started in June 2015. The good thing is that the buses are quite new as well. In a few years, Giant Ibis became already the best and most modern operators across Cambodia. Giant Ibis is widely regarded to be more professional than most others in the country. It has more in common with western bus companies than most of its Cambodian rivals. But Giant Ibis is not only the best bus operator in Cambodia. If you want to travel from Thailand to Cambodia or from Vietnam to Cambodia or the other way round – Giant Ibis has you covered!

Giant Ibis Universe Luxury Bus

The best Bus Operator in Cambodia

Apart from the new buses, there are a few more things that you will love about Giant Ibis.

More legroom and reclining seats. Free Water and a Snack. Free Wifi and power sockets.

Giant Ibis Transport puts passenger safety first and has the safest record of any passenger transport company in Cambodia, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation. They are the first company to implement a two-driver policy on trips of more than four hours to prevent driver fatigue.

More than 12 full-time mechanics work with the drivers daily on a maintenance scheme to prevent breakdowns before they can occur. A checklist walk-through is carried out on each bus before each departure.

Giant Ibis is also a very good option for those looking to cross the Cambodian border into Thailand or Vietnam. This process is usually very confusing and can become quite stressful so it is to the operator’s credit that border crossings on these services are as hassle-free as possible. Giant Ibis has a contact that will escort you through the border and streamline the process.

Buses on these routes have Wi-Fi as well as individual power sockets which is a rarity. As any frequent traveler will know, being able to charge your phone is incredibly useful for when you arrive at an unfamiliar destination and are trying to work out how to get to your hotel.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

The main route that Giant Ibis offers inside Cambodia is from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. There are five buses per day from the capital to Siem Reap, close to the world-famous site of Angkor Wat. The first bus leaves at 08.45. The others leave at 09.45 and 12.30 and at the night at 23.00 and 23.30. The trip usually takes seven hours in either direction. There are also tree departures heading from Siem Reap to the capital each day, starting at 08.45. The other two leave at 09.45 and 12.30 and at the night at 23.00 and 23.30. Tickets for either journey are priced at about USD 15 per person. Keep in mind that road conditions change quite a bit over the year in Cambodia. In the dry season with repaired roads, the bus can be one hour or faster. The opposite goes for Rainy Season where the bus can be late. On top of that, you might have traffic. So never book another transportation to close to your expected arriving time.

For those looking to head to Cambodia’s stunning beaches in the south of the country, you can visit Sihanoukville from Phnom Penh. There are two buses leaving the capital per day at 08.00 and 12.30. The journey lasts less than five hours so you can even relax on the beach in the afternoon if you take the morning bus! There are two daily services from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, at 08.30 and 15:30, with all departures priced at USD11.

Cambodian Departures and Arrivals:

Siem Reap: Giant Ibis bus terminal just north of the Sokha Angkor Resort, directly behind the Angkor National Museum
Kampot: Giant Ibis ticket office near the Durian roundabout behind Sokimex petrol station
Sihanoukville: Giant Ibis ticket office on the road to Sokha Beach about 200 meters from Two Lions roundabout.

International service: Vietnam – Cambodia – Vietnam

Giant Ibis offers international routes as well. From Phnom Penh, you can travel to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh, with two daily departures at 08.00 and 9.45. The trip takes around six hours so you’ll arrive in the afternoon. Tickets cost around USD 18. The bus stops in downtown Ho Chi Minh City at the Giant Ibis ticket office on Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1. Once you’ve received your baggage there are plenty of metered taxis available to take you to your next destination.

If you are interested in visiting Thailand then it is possible to use Giant Ibis to travel by bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok. There is two bus service per day. Taiwan High-Speed Rail Booking

Taiwan High Speed Rail

The fast trainsystem in Taiwan are called Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR). THSR is a railway line crossing Taiwan for from north to south. It runs approximately 350 km (217 mi) along the west coast, from the capital Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung. THSR operates  high-speed bullet trains. These trains reach a speed of 300 km/h or  225 mph.

Despite the fact that these trains were built using the technology of the Japanese high-speed network Shinkansen  the fare is not as high as in Japan. All stations  are connected with the centers of cities served by the metro line, conventional rail or free shuttle buses.
